:- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Bumblebarb -- Very, very odd word substitutions : Somehow it seems the text has been run through some kind of translation and possibly another language, and then back-translated into an attempt at 21st century English. Very odd word choices - some potentially would have been archaic usages (but I don't think so - they just break down into initials or incorrect usage, and I've read Conrad before and that doesn't track) and some are VERY clearly weird AI substitutions where I can't tell what the original words were - but a novel about early 20th century California shouldn't contain references to eBooks, C programming, or other modern electronics and technologies. Sometimes the translations are understandable, like "my expensive" for "my dear", other times they just degenerate into single letters, or remarkably confused sentences. - 3.0 out of 5 stars from A.D. Hopkins -- Half a good story : In The Valley Of The Moon, Jack London shows the reader what he can do, and then doesn't do it. First part of the book is the most perceptive and best-written example I can remember of a love story told from the viewpoint of BOTH lovers, but then it dissolves into a treatise on agricultural practices. - 1.0 out of 5 stars from SpiderGrrl -- Total Cr*p Printing! : A totally mess of a printing... mismatched fonts? 9x11 sheets of tiny text with 1" margins? ( Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2019 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Good read : The story line may be dated but the ideals and trials of the characters still ring true today. Humans have suffered and then won out. Humans have seen racial and ethnic troubles but have found ways to cooperate and respect each other. And finally, humans have searched for their own piece of perfection and sometimes they find it. Beautiful vocabulary and description in this book. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2017 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from greenhead -- An interesting view of America 100 years ago : While it is not one of London's best novels, I have found it fascinating to read his take on what was happening to the working class in the US in the period just before we entered WWI. The debates over whether the unions were ultimately going to help improve wages and the real concerns about the increasing wealth of the business tycoons of the day at a time when laborers wages were being undercut by influx of immigration. -- All before the "triumphs" of the Progressive Era and the New Deal legislation that gave unions some government backing. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from OleBill -- Jack London wrote this too! : This story is long in the writing and offers some surprises about Jack London. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2013 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Dr Skeeter -- The Vally of the Moon : The Valley of the Moon is a bit different than most of Jack London's novels. I was expecting something different, and I was not disappointed. I spent about half the book trying to figure out how Saxon and Billy would actually make it to the moon. I was expecting something along the lines of The Scarlet Plague, that is science fiction, but got something entirely different. For my taste it was a bit disappointing, still it was a pretty good read but not quite as good as his other better known works. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2012 )

- 3.0 out of 5 stars from A. Unsworth -- This one paid the bills. : Valley of the Moon Book 1. I suppose i should have paid more attention to the full title - "Book 1"- because this is not a complete book, rather a third of a book, or a half at best. if you are a fan of Jack london and want to read this then please make sure you are getting the full story. Secondly, there is probably on average 1 typo every page in this version. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 20, 2016 )
